The irony - seeing the lack of care given to our city and then being asked on a city survey what are the existing problems in Boulder. Any of the streets that contained medians were in the same shape they generally have been for the last several years - weedy, unsightly and generally not taken care of. My wife and I ran several errands, driving many of the main streets - South Broadway, 28th, Baseline, etc. Life is full of ironies, and I had one on Tuesday. I hope (and suspect) that there are a few million other Patriotic Progressives for Peace (PPP) among our fellow citizens - and those of many other countries. I regard myself as a dedicated patriot who believes that America needs a good deal of work. So, years ago, my wife and I built a six-foot diameter peace symbol, illuminated it with light-emitting diodes powered by the sun and hung it on a shed at the end of our driveway for all to see. I believe that freedom, democracy, justice for all, fully-socialized medicine like that enjoyed by the military and their families, and safeguarding the ecosystems of our fragile little planet are critically important issues that merit strong support. I joined Vets for Peace in 1968 between military and graduate school. I’m an ordinary white guy who in my youth did the Eagle Scout and Captain in the Air Force things. ![]() Accordingly, I sought a way to communicate with our dear neighbors more clearly. ![]() This and related actions by some of our leaders make the flying of American flags at one’s home more than a bit ambiguous. Our country includes many members of Congress who sport Armani suits with American Flags in their lapels and who vote to increase Pentagon spending and fossil fuel extraction while cutting funds for education, Medicare, environmental matters, the IRS and PBS.
